Travel like a respectful pilgrim. Learn the do's & don'ts of Indian temples & monasteries, the major festivals, and handy Hindi phrases — the language spoken across the Buddhist circuit.
Buddhist sites are living places of worship. A little respect goes a long way — here's what to do and what to avoid.
Take off footwear (and sometimes hats) before entering temples & shrine rooms.
Cover shoulders & knees. Carry a shawl for shrine interiors.
Circumambulate (pradakshina) stupas & shrines keeping them on your right.
Speak softly & silence your phone, especially near meditators & monks.
Greet with a slight bow & joined palms; lower your head when receiving blessings.
Give & receive offerings, prasad or money with the right hand (or both hands).
Seek permission before photographing monks, ceremonies or shrine interiors.
Never point your feet toward the Buddha, an altar or a monk. Sit cross-legged or kneel.
Keep footwear outside the shrine; socks are usually fine.
Indicate with an open hand, not a single finger — especially at images or people.
Never sit on, climb or touch sacred statues, relics or stupas for photos.
Avoid smoking, alcohol & loud behaviour anywhere near sacred sites.
Women should avoid touching monks; hand items via a layman or place them down.
Avoid public displays of affection at religious places.
Time your pilgrimage with a festival for an unforgettable, deeply spiritual experience.

You're welcome to sit quietly, meditate or observe prayers — follow the locals' lead.
